A tragic incident occurred in Likoni, Mombasa, when a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer lost his life following a heated argument over an unpaid boda boda ride.
The officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, was involved in an altercation with the boda boda rider, Antony Otieno, after allegedly refusing to pay for the ride.
The incident unfolded when the officer alighted from the motorcycle at Likoni Primary Vyemani Grounds but allegedly avoided paying the fare.
Reports indicate that the officer made several phone calls, trying to delay the payment. However, when Otieno demanded the payment, the officer reportedly became aggressive.
In a bid to intimidate the rider, the officer pulled out an AK-47 rifle and fired shots into the air. This action not only scared Otieno but also injured two innocent bystanders who were in the vicinity.
As the situation escalated, the boda boda rider, Otieno, managed to overpower the officer and disarm him.
During the struggle, the officer allegedly bit Otieno’s nose in an attempt to defend himself. However, the altercation did not stop there.
In an apparent attempt to escape, the officer jumped onto the motorcycle, but Otieno was quick to react and pulled him to the ground.
A fierce struggle ensued as the officer fired more shots, but Otieno, with the help of bystanders, managed to take control of the gun.
The situation quickly turned fatal. The officer was ultimately killed in the chaos, and his body was transported to the Coast General Hospital mortuary.
Police arrived at the scene and recovered the firearm, along with 12 rounds of ammunition, a motorcycle, a mobile phone, and four spent cartridges. The police have launched an investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, the injured bystanders, who were caught in the crossfire, were rushed to Likoni Sub-County Hospital, where they are receiving medical treatment. Their condition is not yet known.
