The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has released a weather advisory forecasting rainfall in several parts of the country, including Nairobi, over the next seven days.
The advisory, issued on January 21, 2025, warns residents to prepare for both sunny and rainy conditions as temperatures soar above 30°C in many regions.
Dr. David Gikungu, Director-General of the Kenya Meteorological Department, stated,
“Residents in Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi should expect morning rains followed by afternoon showers.”
While the mornings will be wet, afternoons will be mostly sunny, with some parts experiencing showers.
Nairobi residents, particularly those in the Central Business District (CBD), should expect some disruptions, especially with floods expected during the rains.
"Be cautious when moving around the city," Gikungu advised.
"The rains may cause temporary flooding, making roads slippery, so it is important to remain alert."
The advisory also covers several counties around the Lake Victoria Basin, including Kisumu, Kakamega, Siaya, and Bungoma.
“Thunderstorms are likely, with brief periods of heavy rainfall during the morning and afternoon hours,” Gikungu warned.
The Central and South Rift Valley areas like Nakuru, Bomet, and Trans-Nzoia will also see similar weather patterns.
Residents in southeastern counties such as Machakos, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita-Taveta will experience warmer daytime temperatures, but there may be occasional light rains.
Coastal areas, including Mombasa and Kilifi, are expected to see mostly sunny intervals, with some light morning showers.
However, the North-Eastern and North-Western regions, such as Garissa, Mandera, and Wajir, will experience extremely high temperatures, potentially reaching 38°C.
“Stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially during the midday heat,” Dr. Gikungu advised.
The advisory also warned of cold nights in some highland areas, where temperatures could dip below 10°C.
“Residents in these areas should expect chilly nights and should take precautions to stay warm,” Gikungu added.
Kenya Met urges all residents to stay informed and prepared for the varying weather patterns in the coming days.
"It's essential to monitor updates from the Meteorological Department and take necessary precautions to safeguard your health and property," concluded Gikungu.
