Kenyans have praised the quick thinking of a Citi Hoppa bus driver who attempted to block the vehicle involved in the abduction of Tanzanian activist Maria Sarungi Tsehai.
The incident, which took place on January 12, 2025, near Yaya Center in Nairobi, has sparked a wave of admiration for the driver’s bravery.
In a video that quickly went viral, the bus driver was seen reversing his vehicle in an attempt to block a black Toyota Noah, which was allegedly used to abduct Tsehai.
The driver, though unsuccessful in stopping the vehicle, tried his best to prevent the abductors from escaping.
Another driver in the area also tried to intervene, but the abductors managed to maneuver the car and flee the scene.
Witnesses to the scene, including a woman filming the incident, can be heard urging the drivers to stop the abductors.
"They should let the woman go, why are they doing this? Block him from getting away," one of the bystanders shouted.
Although the attempt did not stop the abduction, the actions of the bus driver were widely acknowledged on social media, with many Kenyans calling him a hero.
Following the release of the video, many users on X (formerly Twitter) expressed their appreciation for the Citi Hoppa driver.
One user wrote, “A shout-out to the Citi Hoppa driver who attempted to block the vehicle that abducted Tanzanian activist Maria Tsehai at Yaya Center in Nairobi.
Next time, don’t miss fellow Kenyans.” Others echoed similar sentiments, praising the driver for his courageous response to the dangerous situation.
Hours after the abduction, Maria Tsehai took to social media to confirm that she had been safely released.
The activist thanked God for her safety and promised to share more details about her ordeal, which she suspects may have been carried out by Tanzanian security agents due to her outspoken criticism of the Tanzanian government.
Tsehai’s group, Change Tanzania, issued a statement condemning the kidnapping and suggested that her abduction was part of an effort to silence her advocacy for justice and human rights.
