Joseph Kairo, also known as Khalif Kairo, a well-known city car dealer, is facing fraud charges after allegedly failing to fulfill vehicle sale agreements.
Kairo, 28, was arrested on Saturday, January 11, 2025, after two separate clients accused him of defrauding them.
According to the prosecution, Kairo collected KSh 2.9 million from Dona Ayalo Okoth for the purchase of a Subaru Outback and KSh 2.1 million for the importation of a Honda Vezel Hybrid from Japan.
However, he reportedly failed to deliver the vehicles as promised.
At the Milimani Law Courts, Kairo denied the charges, asserting his innocence.
His legal team, which includes prominent lawyers Danstan Omari, Cliff Ombeta, and Martina Swiga, argued that the accusations were part of a business rivalry with older motor vehicle dealers.
Kairo, who started his car-dealing business at the age of 18, has sold over 300 cars, amounting to billions of shillings, according to his defense.
His lawyers insisted that he is being unfairly targeted due to his success and competition in the industry.
The prosecution, however, claims that Kairo’s actions were fraudulent. Investigating officer Esther Mburu presented a flight ticket as evidence, showing that Kairo had planned to fly to New York on January 12, 2025.
This led to concerns that Kairo might have been planning to flee the country.
Mburu also stated that Kairo had no fixed residence and had evaded authorities until his recent arrest.
Kairo’s defense team strongly opposed the claims, arguing that the flight ticket was purchased months before the allegations arose and was part of a planned business trip.
His lawyers also questioned the integrity of the charges, asserting that the accusations were motivated by jealousy from rival car dealers.
Despite the defense's arguments, the state remains adamant that Kairo poses a flight risk.
The court is expected to make a decision on Kairo’s bail application on Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
Kairo, meanwhile, appeared composed during the hearing, even posing for photos with journalists.
