Two women were arrested in Kimbo, Kiambu County, on Saturday after detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) uncovered a dangerous operation where weed cookies were being sold to children.
The arrests followed a well-coordinated raid by the Anti-Narcotics Unit and the Operations Directorate, aimed at curbing the illegal drug trade in the area.
The two women, identified as Pauline Wanjiru Njeri, 38, and Monica Wangare, 35, were taken into custody after the DCI seized a large quantity of cannabis and weed cookies stored in clear buckets.
The police also found an electric oven, which was being used to bake the cookies, and a digital weighing scale, which the suspects allegedly used to measure the illegal substances.
The operation began with a raid on a house in the Backstreet area, where officers recovered dried cannabis leaves and multiple rolls of cannabis.
However, the person residing in the house managed to escape before the authorities could apprehend them.
In the second location, which appeared to be functioning as a shop, the two women were caught in possession of more illegal drugs, as well as items believed to be proceeds from their drug trade.
The DCI emphasized the growing danger of drug use among children, highlighting that many young people are being targeted by dealers selling products like weed cookies.
These cookies, often disguised as harmless treats, are being sold to children without the knowledge of their parents, leading to serious concerns about their safety.
The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has previously warned about the rise of new drug trends, including the use of social media platforms to promote illegal substances.
In 2023, NACADA discovered a dangerous mixture of narcotics in new substances being sold, further highlighting the need for vigilance.
The authority has called on influencers and content creators to stop promoting drug use, stressing that such behavior is not only irresponsible but also illegal.
