Naomi Chitsaka, the headteacher of Mashamba Primary School in Malindi, tragically lost her life in a plane crash on January 10, 2025.
This devastating event occurred along the Malindi-Mombasa highway, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
Chitsaka was aboard a Cessna 172 aircraft that suffered engine trouble shortly after taking off from Malindi Airport.
The pilot, in an attempt to avoid a collision with an oncoming truck, lost control, and the plane crashed, resulting in the deaths of Chitsaka and two others.
Chitsaka's life had already been marked by resilience and bravery. In 2017, she survived a severe road accident that led to the amputation of one of her legs.
Despite this life-altering event, she continued to push forward, overcoming immense challenges.
Just a week before the fatal crash, Chitsaka was involved in another minor road accident, which only added to the emotional toll her family and colleagues were already enduring.
The crash, which took place at approximately 2:50 pm, killed Chitsaka and her boda boda rider, Felix Hamisi, who was known for frequently providing transport services to her.
A third victim, boda boda operator Vincent Kasena Ruwa, also died in the crash.
The survivors, including the pilot and a flight instructor, sustained only minor injuries and received medical attention.
Eyewitnesses described the horrific scene, noting that the aircraft’s propeller severed Chitsaka’s head during the crash.
Chitsaka was preparing for an important promotional interview, further highlighting her dedication to her work and her determination to progress in her career.
Her colleagues at Mashamba Primary School remembered her as a resilient educator who overcame many obstacles.
Deputy Headteacher Mwaka Rubea described her as a brave woman whose death has left a deep void.
