Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has stepped in to offer a new life to a three-year-old boy, Baby James, who recently witnessed the heartbreaking murder of his father in Mathare.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday, January 22, 2025, when the boy's father was attacked and stabbed by thugs while walking his son to school in Mathare's Area 4.
Baby James was left in shock after seeing his father die in front of him.
The disturbing event quickly gained public attention, and Sonko, known for his charitable work, expressed his desire to adopt the boy and provide him with a safe and supportive home.
On January 26, 2025, Sonko took to social media to announce that he had officially adopted Baby James, ensuring a better future for the traumatized child.
Sonko thanked various local officials who helped care for the boy following the murder.
Among them were Mr. Victor Owiti, the Sub-County Children’s Officer in Mathare, Christine Dembah, the Senior Chief of Mathare, and Agness Nganga, the Assistant Chief of Utalii, all of whom played a key role in supporting Baby James during this difficult time.
In his heartfelt post, Sonko reassured Baby James that he would be taken care of and promised to enroll him in therapy to help with the emotional scars caused by the trauma.
The former governor also stated that Baby James would be enrolled in a new school to continue his education.
“I thank God for blessing me with another son. Baby James, the child whose father was stabbed to death by thugs, will now be part of my family,” Sonko wrote.
The murder of Baby James' father has shaken the Mathare community, leading to protests as residents voiced their anger and sorrow.
The father, described as a hardworking man who worked in construction to provide for his son, was a single parent.
Neighbors recalled how his lunchbox was found beside his body, with food remnants scattered around, a reminder of the father's last effort to feed his son before his untimely death.
