The Ministry of Sports has shown its support for the family of the late Ezekiel Otuoma by donating KSh 500,000.
The donation was announced during Otuoma’s funeral in Siaya County, with representatives from the ministry delivering the funds and extending condolences on behalf of Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya.
Beth Wamalwa, a representative from the Ministry of Sports, addressed the mourners at the funeral, explaining how the donation would be distributed.
"We are here today with the deepest sympathy from the Ministry of Sports. We want to support Rachel, Ezekiel’s mother, and his daughter in this difficult time," she said.
Wamalwa added that the KSh 500,000 would be divided equally between Rachel and Otuoma’s daughter to ensure fairness.
"After talking to Rachel and Mama Ezekiel, we have agreed that the money will be split in half. Each will receive KSh 250,000.
We’ve decided to send the money directly to their separate accounts to avoid any issues,” she explained.
She went on to praise Rachel Otuoma for the care and attention she gave her son, Ezekiel, during his life. “Rachel has done a lot for Ezekiel.
She has been a dedicated mother, and this donation is a small way for the ministry to show our appreciation for her efforts,” Wamalwa said.
In addition to the financial support, Wamalwa also emphasized the importance of creating support systems for athletes.
“We must encourage athletes to speak up about their struggles.
Many times, issues are hidden, and the ministry doesn't know how to help unless athletes are open about their challenges.
We need support groups where athletes can come together, share their experiences, and get help,” she urged.
At the funeral, Ezekiel Otuoma’s daughter, Kimberly, fought back tears as she spoke about her father.
"I never got the chance to bond deeply with my dad. It’s really hard to say goodbye," she said, her voice breaking with emotion.
Her words moved the crowd, with many offering their condolences and comfort.
Wamalwa’s message concluded with a tribute to Ezekiel Otuoma’s legacy. “Ezekiel’s impact on the world of sports will never be forgotten.
His family’s strength and resilience will live on in the hearts of those he inspired,” she said.
