Senior Presidential Economic Council advisor Moses Kuria has expressed disappointment over an incident in Embu County, where Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi was heckled while delivering a condolence message from President William Ruto.
The incident took place on Friday, January 3, during the burial of former Senator Lenny Kivuti’s son, Lenny Kivuti Jr.
Kuria, speaking on Saturday, January 4, termed the act as disrespectful and against cultural values.
“In our culture, we don’t refuse condolences, even from people we don’t like.
Condolences are meant to comfort the grieving family, and such messages should be respected,” Kuria stated.
The heckling occurred in the presence of high-ranking government officials, including Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
It disrupted Muturi’s attempt to communicate President Ruto’s sympathies, drawing sharp criticism from Kuria.
He urged Senator Kivuti to publicly distance himself and his family from what he called an "ungodly" act.
“You don’t have to agree with the president, but he has the right to express his condolences.
This behavior is unacceptable, and I expect Senator Kivuti to clarify that his family was not involved in this,” Kuria added.
The incident comes amid heightened political tensions in Embu County. Residents recently protested the alleged abduction of activist and social media influencer Billy Mwangi, who was reportedly taken from a barbershop on December 21.
The abduction sparked outrage, leading to demonstrations in Embu Town on December 27, where businesses and transport services were disrupted.
Gitonga Mukunji, the Member of Parliament for Manyatta, joined the protests, condemning state agencies for their actions.
“We cannot allow extrajudicial tactics to continue in the name of maintaining law and order. We demand Billy’s immediate release,” Mukunji stated during the demonstrations.
Kuria acknowledged the community’s frustrations but emphasized the importance of maintaining decorum during somber occasions like funerals.
“The family is already in pain. Adding chaos and disrespect at such a time only deepens the wounds,” he said.
This event has sparked national conversations about respect for cultural values and the need for justice in addressing cases like Billy Mwangi’s disappearance.
