The angry villagers confronted the officers, blocking their vehicle and demanding answers.
The commotion began when Gatwiri was reportedly forced into a Subaru car by the detectives.
A witness, Grace Wambui, explained, “I saw Gatwiri being grabbed and pushed into the vehicle by armed men. I raised the alarm, and people came quickly to help.”
According to Gatwiri, the officers had called her earlier, asking her to meet them in Ngurubani town.
“They told me they needed my help to track a friend of mine. But when I arrived, they bundled me into their car without any explanation,” she said, visibly shaken.
The situation quickly escalated as villagers, armed with crude weapons, surrounded the vehicle.
Many expressed anger over what they perceived as an attempted abduction. “We cannot allow this to happen in our village.
We’ve heard of cases involving Subaru cars and kidnappings, and we won’t tolerate it here,” said Peter Maina, one of the protesters.
The standoff ended when armed officers from Wanguru Police Station arrived, accompanied by Kiarukungu Location Chief Henry Kariuki. They intervened to calm the situation and rescue the detectives.
Chief Kariuki clarified the operation, explaining that the officers were investigating a robbery suspect who had been in communication with Gatwiri.
“The misunderstanding occurred because the detectives did not inform the local administration or the Wanguru officers about their mission,” he said.
The suspect in question was later confirmed to have been arrested earlier that morning.
This incident has heightened concerns among residents, who fear growing cases of abductions linked to police vehicles.
“We will stay vigilant to ensure no such actions take place in our community,” said another resident, Michael Waweru.
