President William Ruto of Kenya and French President Emmanuel Macron have held critical talks regarding the ongoing crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The discussions come as tensions in the region escalate, with a major emergency meeting of East African Community Heads of State set for Wednesday to address the situation.
Recent reports from AFP have highlighted the severe impact of the violence, with at least 17 people killed and over 300 injured in the ongoing conflict.
The M-23 rebel group has reportedly taken control of Goma, the capital of eastern DRC, and has seized the local branch of the state broadcaster RTNC.
This has raised serious concerns over the stability of the region and the potential for further escalation.
During the meeting between Presidents Ruto and Macron, the French leader reaffirmed his country’s support for Kenya’s efforts in addressing the crisis in the DRC.
Macron emphasized that France is committed to backing regional peace initiatives, and praised Kenya's role in peace efforts in other parts of Africa, including Somalia, Sudan, and South Sudan.
President Ruto welcomed Macron’s support, noting that both leaders agreed on the importance of addressing the crisis in the DRC through a collaborative, regional approach.
The Kenyan President also indicated that efforts to stabilize the region would continue, with Kenya playing an active role in diplomatic and peacekeeping initiatives.
In addition to the talks with President Macron, President Ruto held a separate meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The two leaders discussed a range of issues, including Kenya’s involvement in the United Nations-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti.
They also explored opportunities for boosting investment and economic growth through the Strategic Trade and Investment Partnership (STIP).
Secretary Rubio expressed appreciation for Kenya's leadership in promoting peace and security, not only in the DRC but also in neighboring countries.
He condemned the M-23's assault on Goma and reiterated the United States' commitment to the sovereignty of the DRC.
Rubio and DRC President Félix Tshisekedi are working to advance the Luanda Process, a peace initiative aiming to resolve tensions between DRC and Rwanda.
