A tragic accident on the Mwea-Embu Highway in Kirinyaga County has left one boda boda rider dead after a pickup truck carrying miraa collided with his motorcycle.
The accident took place near the Kianjiru Trading Centre, where the pickup, which was traveling from Meru to Nairobi, reportedly collided with the motorcycle at high speed.
Eyewitnesses to the accident describe a harrowing scene.
Peter Macharia, one of the witnesses, explained that the impact of the crash was severe, with the truck dragging the rider for several meters along the busy highway.
"The driver dragged the rider several meters from the scene," Macharia said, visibly disturbed by what he had seen.
Following the collision, local residents, angered by the loss of life, took matters into their own hands.
The truck, which had been involved in a previous deadly accident in Ngurubani Town just weeks ago, was set ablaze by the crowd.
Traffic police officers from Wanguru Police Station were at the scene but were unable to manage the rising tensions among the locals.
"Police cannot control this crowd," said Mary Wambui, a resident who witnessed the event.
The incident caused major traffic disruptions, with vehicles unable to pass through the area for over two hours.
Commuters and transport operators were caught in the chaos, as the road was blocked from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
Joseph Wanjohi, another local, added, "The angry residents say this is the same pickup that killed two children in Ngurubani Town."
David Irungu, the chairman of boda boda operators in Kimbimbi, confirmed the deceased was a local rider and expressed his condolences.
He also stressed the need for better road safety measures, saying, "This is another tragic loss for the community. It’s becoming a weekly occurrence, and something needs to be done."
The accident has ignited outrage among the residents, who are now calling for stricter regulations on the transportation of miraa.
Many are urging the government to enforce traffic laws more effectively, particularly for the high-speed miraa transport trucks that frequently pass through populated areas.
