President William Ruto has addressed the ongoing debate about opposition leader Raila Odinga’s bid for a key African Union (AU) position.
Speaking during a recent public engagement, Ruto acknowledged that not everyone supports Raila’s candidacy.
However, he clarified that this opposition does not necessarily stem from a direct rivalry or competition for the role.
“There are Kenyans who don’t want Raila to win the AU seat,” Ruto stated. “But let’s be clear, they aren’t competing with him for the position.”
His comments highlight the political tensions surrounding the AU role, which has become a hot topic in Kenya’s political circles.
Ruto emphasized that the differences of opinion are rooted in varying political ideologies rather than personal vendettas.
“This is not about individual competition. It’s about who can best serve Kenya’s interests in the African Union,” he said.
He called for a broader, more unified approach to addressing Kenya’s representation on the continental stage.
The AU seat, which is seen as a prestigious and influential position, has drawn attention from both Raila’s supporters and critics.
Ruto noted that while it’s normal for Kenyans to hold differing views, the focus should remain on what benefits the country as a whole.
“We need to put Kenya first. Personal politics should not distract us from the bigger picture,” he added.
Raila Odinga, a veteran politician with years of experience, continues to command significant support across the country.
However, his political history with Ruto has often fueled tension between their respective camps.
Despite this, Ruto’s recent remarks suggest that the debate over the AU seat should transcend political divisions.
“We may not always agree, but Kenya’s interests must come first,” Ruto said.
He urged Kenyans to rise above political rivalries and think about the nation’s future on the African stage.
“At the end of the day, this is about Kenya not about Raila, not about me, but about us as a country.”
