Jubilee Party Secretary-General, Jeremiah Kioni, has strongly criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for not following through on his recent threat to reveal the individuals behind the rising abductions in Kenya.
Kioni’s remarks came after Gachagua had claimed that a covert unit, operating independently of the police, was responsible for the abductions, and that he would disclose its leaders if the unit was not dismantled.
On Thursday, January 2, 2025, Kioni posted a statement on his official X page, urging Gachagua to stop playing politics with such a serious issue.
Kioni expressed his disappointment, saying, "If Gachagua knows who is behind these abductions, he should stop making empty threats and speak up.
People are suffering, and lives are at risk." He went on to warn that using the abductions for political gain was a betrayal of the families who have been affected.
The former DP had made his claims during a speech on December 27, 2024, where he accused a unit led by someone named “Abel,” a relative of a senior government official, of being behind the abductions.
"This unit is not under the command of the Inspector General of Police," Gachagua stated.
"If this unit is not dismantled, we will reveal the name of the building and the full identities of the officer and his cousin."
Kioni, who is an ally of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, said that Gachagua's refusal to name names was irresponsible.
He added, "We cannot allow this issue to become a political game. The people of Kenya need action, not more talk."
The rise in abductions has caused widespread fear, especially with cases like the recent disappearance of six young people during the Christmas holiday.
As Kenyans anxiously await answers, President William Ruto has assured the nation that his government is committed to ending the practice of abductions.
Kioni’s call for Gachagua to act has added pressure to the government to take concrete steps toward solving the issue.
“This matter is far too serious for theatrics,” Kioni concluded. “It’s time for real leadership.”
