A prayer rally in Nyeri on January 18, 2025, was disrupted when former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga and his followers arrived, causing chaos.
Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, the wife of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, was leading the prayers at Kamkunji Grounds when the disturbance occurred.
The event had been peaceful until Njenga's group entered, chanting loudly and causing confusion. As a result, Dorcas and other local leaders were forced to leave for safety.
In response to the disruption, Gachagua accused the government of using Njenga and remnants of the outlawed Mungiki sect to cause trouble at the religious event.
He condemned the government’s actions in a tweet, calling it the lowest level of desperation to unleash criminal gangs on a peaceful church gathering.
Gachagua claimed the intention was to intimidate him and interfere with the religious freedom of the people.
The former Deputy President linked the disruption to tactics used by the late President Daniel arap Moi’s regime.
Gachagua suggested that President William Ruto was using similar methods to control the people of Mount Kenya, accusing the government of trying to force the region into political submission.
Gachagua has previously claimed that Ruto plans to use Njenga’s group to manipulate Mount Kenya voters into supporting his government.
Meanwhile, Njenga, who was at the scene, refuted Gachagua’s claims. He urged the people of Mount Kenya to avoid divisive politics and instead support the current government for national unity and progress.
Njenga called on the residents to focus on peace, prosperity, and backing the government for the good of the entire nation.
Although Gachagua had been scheduled to attend the rally, he canceled his appearance, citing security concerns.
The situation turned tense, and the leaders had to leave the venue as the crowd became increasingly rowdy.
