A tragic incident unfolded in Likoni, Mombasa, when a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer was killed after a violent confrontation over an unpaid boda boda fare.
The disagreement, which began as a simple issue of payment, quickly turned deadly.
It all started when the KDF officer took a boda boda ride from Likoni Primary Vyemani Grounds.
After reaching the destination, he allegedly tried to avoid paying the fare by pretending to make phone calls.
However, the boda boda rider, Antony Otieno, wasn’t going to let the matter slide. He demanded payment from the officer.
Reports say that instead of paying, the officer pulled out an AK-47 rifle and fired shots into the air to scare Otieno.
In the process, two innocent bystanders were injured by the gunfire.
As the situation escalated, Otieno managed to disarm the officer and push him off the motorcycle, which the officer had tried to use to flee.
The struggle didn’t stop there. In a desperate move, the officer tried again to get on the bike and escape, but Otieno was quick to pull him down.
The two continued to fight, with the officer firing several more shots. However, the boda boda rider was able to take control of the weapon.
It wasn’t long before bystanders, who had been watching the scene unfold, rushed in to support Otieno, turning the situation into a chaotic confrontation.
Unfortunately, the officer lost his life during the scuffle. His body was later taken to the Coast General Hospital mortuary.
Police arrived at the scene soon after and recovered the officer’s firearm, 12 rounds of ammunition, a motorcycle, and a mobile phone. They also found four spent cartridges.
The two injured bystanders were taken to Likoni Sub-County Hospital for treatment. Investigations into the tragic event are ongoing.
