On Sunday, January 5, 2025, the football community came together to honor the late Ezekiel Otuoma, a former AFC Leopards star who passed away after battling Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
The event was held at the ABSA Sports Grounds along Thika Road, where more than 30 teams participated in a seven-a-side tournament to raise funds for Otuoma’s burial.
The memorial event was organized by Otuoma's first coach, Eric Bob Otieno, who was overwhelmed by the huge turnout.
"I have never seen so many people from all walks of life coming together for such a purpose. It was more than a success.
We had originally planned for 20 teams, but we ended up with 35," Otieno shared. "Some teams even sent money but could not participate."
Among the notable figures who attended the event were former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama and his brother McDonald Mariga, who is currently the FKF Deputy President.
Other football greats, including respected coach Robert Matano, former Kenyan internationals Titus Mulama and James Situma, were also present to support the fundraiser.
Otuoma, who had been diagnosed with MND in 2020, was well-known for his skill on the field, especially his speed and ability to control the ball.
He had a promising career ahead of him, playing for several Kenyan clubs such as Ulinzi Stars, Western Stima, Talanta, and Muhoroni Youth. However, his illness led to his early retirement from football.
During the memorial, the teams raised a total of KSh 262,800. “We are grateful to ABSA for providing the venue for free.
The referees and DJ also offered their services without charge, which was a big help,” Otieno added.
Another fundraiser is set for January 8, 2025, at the Mbotela Social Hall in Makadara, where more funds will be raised.
Otuoma will be laid to rest on January 11, 2025, in his home village of Ramula, Gem, Siaya County.
Footballers and fans alike have shared their heartfelt tributes to Otuoma, including Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga, who eulogized him as a great player and friend.
"This was a footballer we admired," said Olunga. "He will forever remain in our hearts."
