A 51-year-old woman, Sylvia Mutoba, has been charged with concealing the death of her husband, George Kalaba, after police discovered his skeletal remains in their home.
The shocking case has also led to the arrest of her four children and a family friend.
According to reports, Sylvia and her pastor were praying over the body for two years, believing he would come back to life.
The incident came to light when George Kalaba’s elder brother, Emmanuel Kalaba, reported the matter to the authorities.
Following investigations, police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed that Sylvia, her children, and a family friend were formally charged.
The accused individuals include Preteria Mbandama Musela, aged 44, as well as George’s children: Wendy Kalaba (27), Sandra Kalaba (22), Natasha Kalaba (19), and a 15-year-old girl. They have all been charged with concealing a death.
Mr. Hamoonga stated that investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding George Kalaba’s death and why the family chose not to report it earlier.
The news of the incident has shocked many people in the community.
Some residents expressed disbelief at how the family lived with the remains for such a long period without notifying the authorities.
Others questioned the influence of religious beliefs in the case, as Sylvia reportedly claimed she was following the instructions of her pastor.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation as the investigation continues, reminding everyone that the suspects remain innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The accused individuals are expected to appear in court soon, where they will face charges related to hiding the death.
Legal experts say that if found guilty, they could face serious penalties, including imprisonment.
In the meantime, the police are conducting further inquiries to understand if there were any external influences or religious motives behind the family's actions.
The case has also raised concerns about mental health and the role of religious leaders in guiding their followers.
