A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer was killed following a violent bar fight at Mtaragon trading centre in Kipkelion West, Kericho County, on Saturday night.
The tragic incident sparked chaos as angry residents retaliated by burning houses and businesses.
According to Kericho County Police Commander James Ngetich, the officer had been drinking at a local pub when he got into an argument with a group of young men.
What started as a simple disagreement quickly turned into a brutal assault. More people joined in the attack, leaving the officer with critical injuries.
Despite efforts by other patrons to intervene and rush him to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries before receiving medical treatment.
By Sunday morning, tension in the area escalated as enraged residents went in search of the suspects responsible for the officer’s death.
When they failed to locate them, they resorted to torching their homes and businesses, causing further destruction.
Several structures were set on fire before security officers were deployed to restore calm.
Police have since launched an investigation into the incident and are urging the public to remain peaceful as they pursue those involved.
The killing of the KDF officer and the subsequent retaliatory attacks have left the community in shock.
Authorities have appealed to residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to prevent further violence.
This incident highlights the growing concern over security in local communities, especially in entertainment spots where conflicts can quickly escalate.
Leaders have urged for better conflict resolution measures to prevent such tragic outcomes.
Police have assured the public that they are doing everything possible to bring the suspects to justice while maintaining law and order in the area.
