A grieving father from Kericho has shared his heartache after his 16-year-old son passed away suddenly after collapsing during a school celebration.
Samuel Cheruiyot, the father, recounted the tragic events that led to the untimely death of his son, a Grade 9 student at Chililis Junior Secondary School.
The boy had been celebrating a victory in a shot-put competition with his classmates when he suddenly fainted.
Cheruiyot was contacted by the school around noon and informed that his son had collapsed while playing. The school staff immediately rushed the young boy to Litein Dispensary for medical attention.
However, when Cheruiyot arrived at the dispensary, he was devastated to find that his son had already passed away.
“It was around noon when we were told that my son was playing and suddenly fainted. The school management helped get him to the hospital. But when I arrived, it was already too late,” Cheruiyot recalled, his voice filled with grief.
The father shared that his son had a history of epilepsy, a condition that may have contributed to his sudden collapse.
“My son had epilepsy, and I wonder if this had anything to do with what happened. It’s hard to understand,” Cheruiyot said.
He explained that his son had been living with epilepsy for some time, and he had never expected the condition to result in such a tragic outcome.
The family is now waiting for a post-mortem to determine the official cause of death. While epilepsy is a possibility, the results of the examination are expected to provide clearer answers.
The school has also expressed its condolences and support for the family during this difficult time.
According to reports, the young boy had fainted after celebrating his sports victory with his friends. He was initially given first aid at Chelilis Clinic before being transferred to Litein Hospital and then to Kapkatet Hospital.
Sadly, the young boy was declared dead on arrival at the hospital, leaving the family in deep sorrow and disbelief.
News of the boy’s passing has spread quickly, and many people on social media have shared their condolences with the grieving family. Several people commented on the story, with many expressing their sadness and sympathizing with the loss.
One user, Gael Pleasant, shared their thoughts about the possible connection between epilepsy and the boy’s sudden collapse.
“Before I read the whole story, I just knew he was either asthmatic or had epilepsy. With epilepsy, when you fall, you first lose your breath, and from there, the chances of dying are higher. May he rest in eternal peace,” Gael wrote.
Another commenter, Charity Mwenda, pointed out the importance of informing schools about any medical conditions a student may have.
“So sorry to the family. The school should be told if a child has any medical condition,” she said, expressing her sympathy for the parents.
Despite the tragedy, Samuel Cheruiyot has chosen not to blame anyone for his son’s death. Instead, he is waiting for the results of the post-mortem examination to better understand what happened.
“I am not blaming anyone. I just want to know the truth. My son’s death is so painful, and I want to be sure of what caused it,” Cheruiyot said.
The loss of the young boy has deeply affected the community, with many people struggling to come to terms with the sudden and unexpected death of a promising student.
