A tragic incident occurred in Narok County on Saturday, February 1, 2025, when a detective from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) was stabbed and later died while enjoying an evening out in a local pub.
The officer, who was stationed in Changamwe, Mombasa County, was attacked while at the Gem Shopping Centre in Trans Mara.
The assailant, identified as Michael Masande, used a Maasai sword to stab the officer under his left armpit.
Despite being rushed to Oasis Hospital in Kehancha and later transferred to Ombo Mission Hospital in Migori County for further treatment, the officer succumbed to his injuries while still undergoing care.
Masande, the primary suspect, was arrested by police shortly after the attack, and the sword used in the stabbing was recovered as evidence.
The officer's body was transferred to St. Akidiva Mabera Hospital’s morgue in preparation for a postmortem examination, which will provide more details on the cause of death.
This shocking event highlights the risks law enforcement officers face even when they are off duty.
It is also a reminder of the increasing number of cases where police officers have been involved in violent incidents while not on duty.
For instance, in December 2024, a police officer in Machakos County was detained after causing a disturbance in a bar over a personal issue, underlining the volatile situations that can arise in public spaces.
The officer's tragic death has raised concerns about the safety of law enforcement officers when they are off duty.
While they are trained to deal with dangerous situations, these off-duty incidents often reveal how vulnerable officers can be in social settings, especially when they are not in uniform or actively engaged in their professional duties.
