The election, set for Saturday, February 15, will see former Prime Minister Raila Odinga contest for the top leadership position. His candidacy has sparked enthusiasm among Kenyan leaders and citizens.
Upon his arrival in Ethiopia, President Ruto confirmed that he would be attending the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU).
The summit will discuss important matters, including reforms within the AU and the election of the next AUC chairperson.
In a statement, Ruto emphasized the importance of the election, expressing his support for Raila’s bid.
"Looking forward to discussions on the reforms of the African Union and the election of the leadership of the African Union Commission, which former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is seeking to chair," Ruto said.
Raila’s bid has attracted significant attention, as he competes against other candidates, including Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.
Kenyans have shown overwhelming support for Raila’s AUC bid, with many traveling to Ethiopia to back him.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi acknowledged this enthusiasm, noting that Kenyans were paying for their own transport and accommodation just to witness the historic moment.
"I know people are asking about the size of Kenya’s delegation to Ethiopia. The level of patriotism and enthusiasm is very high," Mudavadi said.
"While the official delegation is led by the president, many Kenyans have used their own money to travel and show support. Some have even hired buses to make the journey, given the proximity between Kenya and Ethiopia. We deeply appreciate their encouragement and dedication," he added.
The strong support for Raila reflects the hope many have in his leadership to bring change and progress to the African Union.
Many Kenyans have expressed excitement following Ruto’s arrival in Addis Ababa. Social media platforms have been flooded with messages of encouragement and hope for Raila’s victory.
Nicholus Kipkorir wrote: "May Baba win. Our prayers are with him as he prepares to take up the leadership of the African Union."
Joel Njuguna commented: "May God fight for Baba and bring the win home. We know victory is coming soon. And to our dear president, keep up the good work of transforming Kenya."
Tiema K Farithi joked: "Somebody tell the Djibouti candidate that Raila always takes an early lead!"
Daniel Kipngetich Rotich humorously added: "Please ensure Baba wins the election, and also, declare Monday a national holiday!"
If Raila wins the AUC Chairmanship, Kenya will have a stronger voice in continental matters. His leadership could help push for policies that benefit not just Kenya but the entire region.
The AUC election is one of the biggest highlights of the AU Summit, and Kenyans will be keenly watching the outcome.
