A UK coroner has confirmed that Kate Mitchell, a BBC Media Action project manager, was unlawfully killed in a Nairobi hotel in November 2021.
Mitchell’s family has accused Kenyan authorities of failing to cooperate with their efforts to find the full truth about her death.
During an inquest held at the Newcastle Coroner’s Court on Tuesday, February 25, the court heard that Mitchell, 42, suffered a head injury and pressure on the neck.
This was revealed in a postmortem conducted after her body was repatriated to the UK.
The incident happened while she was in Nairobi after being evacuated from Addis Ababa due to rising conflict in Ethiopia.
On the night of her murder, an intruder entered her eighth-floor hotel roo
m and attacked her. Shortly after, the same man was found dead on the ground eight floors below.
UK coroner Karin Welsh told the court, "That man either fell or jumped from the eighth-floor bedroom window, and he also was found deceased."
The coroner ruled that Mitchell was unlawfully killed, but the circumstances of the intruder’s death remain unclear.
Despite the ruling, many questions remain unanswered.
Mitchell’s brother, Paul Mitchell, has expressed frustration over the Kenyan police's lack of cooperation.
"The Kenyan police have just stonewalled any inquiries," he told reporters after the hearing. "They have refused to do anything about it."
The family has hired a lawyer to push for an inquest in Nairobi, hoping for more clarity on the case.
A major concern is the fate of Mitchell’s personal belongings, including her laptop, which have not been returned to the family.
Paul Mitchell questioned the reluctance of Kenyan authorities to provide information.
“Whatever it is that the Kenyan police are reluctant to have brought to light, the collateral damage is that we don’t have answers about Kate’s death.”
The case remains a mystery, with the family still searching for justice three years later. The main concerns include:
How did the intruder gain access to Mitchell’s room?
Why have the Kenyan police not released more information?
What happened to Mitchell’s missing belongings?
