Nairobi residents received a special surprise on Valentine’s Day as Deputy Inspectors General Eliud Lagat (Kenya Police Service) and Gilbert Masengeli (Administration Police Service) distributed flowers in the Central Business District (CBD).
The initiative aimed to spread love and foster positive relations between the police and the public.
The two senior police officers, dressed in full uniform, walked along busy streets such as Harambee Avenue, handing out red roses to passersby.
They engaged warmly with Nairobians, sharing smiles, handshakes, and even hugs.
DIG Masengeli greeted residents formally, while DIG Lagat interacted in a more relaxed manner, laughing and posing for photos with those who stopped to receive the flowers.
Many people welcomed the gesture, saying it was a refreshing show of kindness from the police.
“I never expected to receive flowers from a police officer. It’s a nice surprise,” said one Nairobi resident.
Others took the opportunity to take selfies with the officers, capturing the rare moment of connection between law enforcement and the public.
While many appreciated the police effort to spread love, others remained skeptical.
Some viewed the event as a positive step in improving police-community relations, while others questioned whether it was a public relations strategy rather than a genuine show of goodwill.
“It’s a nice idea, but we also want to see real changes in how the police treat people daily,” commented another resident.
Despite mixed opinions, the initiative sparked conversations about the role of police in society beyond law enforcement.
It demonstrated an effort to connect with citizens on a more personal level, showing that the police are not just enforcers of the law but also members of the community.
The event is part of ongoing efforts by the police service to improve their relationship with the public.
Over the years, there have been concerns about police conduct in Kenya, with some citizens expressing fear and mistrust toward law enforcement.
By engaging in community-friendly activities, the police aim to rebuild trust and promote positive interactions with the people they serve.
