A new opinion poll by Politrack Africa has revealed that Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi is the most preferred candidate for Nairobi Governor if elections were held today.
The survey, conducted via phone interviews across all constituencies in Nairobi County, placed Wanyonyi ahead of other prominent figures like Governor Johnson Sakaja and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.
According to the poll results released on Thursday, February 6, Wanyonyi secured 33% of the respondents’ support.
Embakasi North MP James Gakuya followed closely with 30.1%, surprising many by outperforming more well-known politicians.
Babu Owino ranked third with 20.3%, while Governor Sakaja, who currently holds the seat, came in fourth with only 11.2%.
Speaking about his growing popularity, Wanyonyi’s supporters believe his leadership in Westlands has earned him trust among Nairobi residents.
"Tim has been a dedicated leader, and his track record speaks for itself. Nairobians know he will deliver if given the chance," said one resident from Westlands.
James Gakuya's unexpected rise in the poll also sparked debate. "People underestimate Gakuya, but he has been working quietly.
These numbers show he is a strong contender," noted a political analyst.
Meanwhile, some Nairobi residents expressed disappointment with Sakaja’s performance.
"We had high hopes for Sakaja, but the problems in Nairobi have not reduced. Maybe it's time for new leadership," said a voter from Eastlands.
Babu Owino, who came in third, remains a popular figure, especially among the youth.
His vocal nature and active involvement in Embakasi East affairs have kept his name relevant in Nairobi politics.
However, the poll suggests that while he has a strong following, he might need broader support to secure the governor’s seat.
Other candidates, including former Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) president Richard Ngatia and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, ranked lower.
Ngatia scored 2.2%, while Sifuna managed only 1.7%. Former Nairobi gubernatorial candidate Polycarp Igathe, who was backed by the Azimio coalition in 2022, ranked last with just 1.0%.
With these numbers, the race for Nairobi governor in 2027 is shaping up to be highly competitive.
