John Mbadi, the National Treasury Cabinet Secretary of Kenya, has stirred up controversy in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party after suggesting that he might remove Edwin Sifuna from his position as Secretary-General.
Mbadi, known for his strong political presence, pointed out that he had previously replaced former ODM Secretary-General Ababu Namwamba in a very short time. His latest statement has raised eyebrows and sparked debates within the party.
Mbadi made these comments during a community development event in Ndhiwa, Homa Bay County, where he was working with local leaders to improve educational facilities at Sasi Primary School in Kanyadoto Ward, Ndhiwa Constituency.
The event focused on providing resources to enhance the school’s infrastructure and support the region’s development.
While speaking at this event, Mbadi took the opportunity to express his dissatisfaction with Sifuna’s leadership in ODM.
He reminded those present about how he had quickly taken the position from Ababu Namwamba and hinted that Sifuna might face the same fate if necessary.
These comments come amid growing internal issues within ODM. Several ODM members have joined the Kenya Kwanza government, led by President William Ruto.
This shift has raised concerns about the unity and strength of the party. Many people are wondering whether ODM can remain a strong political force in Kenya, especially with its internal divisions and the growing influence of the ruling coalition.
Edwin Sifuna, who is also the Senator of Nairobi, has been a loyal member of ODM and has continued to push for the party’s core values. Sifuna has defended the principles of ODM and criticized members who have left the party for aligning with Kenya Kwanza.
He recently issued a challenge to party members, urging them to either stick to the party’s principles or leave and join President Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Sifuna has made it clear that ODM cannot remain in opposition forever and must work to protect the rights of Kenyans.
Despite the tension, ODM’s deputy leader, Godfrey Osotsi, has spoken out in defense of Sifuna.
Osotsi emphasized that Sifuna’s role as the official spokesperson for the party means he is simply communicating decisions made by the party’s Central Management Committee (CMC).
He criticized members of ODM who have unfairly targeted Sifuna for doing his job. Osotsi warned that undermining Sifuna’s authority would harm the unity and credibility of the party.
The ongoing power struggle within ODM has left many people questioning the party’s future.
