On Monday, February 3, 2025, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka made a significant statement, urging former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to retire from active politics if he fails to secure the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC).
Speaking during an interview on the Social Newsroom Show with journalist Mark Masai, Kalonzo emphasized that Raila should consider stepping down from local politics, regardless of the AUC election outcome.
“If Raila loses the AUC bid, I don’t see how he can continue leading Azimio,” Kalonzo said.
“I would be amazed if he comes back and says he wants to lead Azimio again. That would not be the Raila I know.”
He added that if Raila fails to clinch the AUC seat, it would be time for him to “retire and join former President Uhuru Kenyatta in that capacity retired statesmen.”
Kalonzo’s comments sparked interest in the political community, as the AUC chairmanship race heats up.
Raila is up against Mahmoud Ali Youssouf from Djibouti and Richard Randriamandrato from Madagascar.
Kalonzo, however, wished Raila the best in his bid, acknowledging his extensive experience and leadership abilities.
“If Raila wins, it will be great for him, the country, and the continent,” he noted. “But if he loses, I believe he should simply retire.”
The former vice president also recognized Raila's significant role in Kenya's politics.
Despite the AUC election, Raila has made it clear that he remains committed to Kenya’s political scene.
“In 2027, we will field a presidential candidate, and I am that candidate,” Raila assured his supporters in Vihiga County earlier.
He dismissed any talks of merging with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), signaling his intention to run for president once again.
Meanwhile, Kalonzo, who has his eyes set on the 2027 presidency, received support from Jubilee Party’s Secretary-General, Jeremiah Kioni.
Kioni revealed that the Mt Kenya region would back Kalonzo’s bid to unseat Ruto.
“There’s a broad alliance forming between the Gikuyu, Embu, and Meru communities, and Kalonzo will be at the helm,” Kioni explained.
As the political season heats up, Kalonzo and Raila remain central figures, each with their own ambitions and paths ahead.
