A sad and shocking event occurred at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi, where a patient, Gilbert Kinyua Muthoni, was found dead under mysterious circumstances.
The incident took place on February 7, 2025, inside the hospital’s Ward 7B, a unit dedicated to treating patients with neurological conditions.
Gilbert Kinyua, who had been admitted to the hospital on December 11, 2024, had a rare neurological disorder that caused severe muscle weakness, leaving him unable to move on his own.
As a result, he required round-the-clock care, including tube feeding.
According to the hospital’s Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO), William Sigilali, Kinyua's condition had been stable until the early hours of February 7.
The night shift team had attended to him during the night, performing their usual checks at 9:00 pm, midnight, and 3:00 am, and nothing unusual was reported.
However, when the morning shift arrived at around 6:00 am, a nurse discovered a blood-stained sheet covering Kinyua’s face.
Upon uncovering him, the nurse found that he was motionless and had a severe cut on his neck. The nurse immediately alerted other hospital staff, security, and medical personnel.
The police were quickly notified, and the area was cordoned off as a crime scene. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) was called in to take charge of the investigation.
Sigilali confirmed that, based on the information gathered so far, there was no evidence to suggest that an outsider had entered the ward to commit the crime.
The hospital management believes that the attack may have been carried out by someone within the hospital, possibly a fellow patient or staff member.
Sigilali emphasized that the hospital is fully cooperating with the authorities to uncover the truth.
Gilbert Kinyua was transferred to KNH from St. Mary’s Hospital in Lang'ata for specialized care.
Upon his arrival, he was found to have pressure ulcers due to his inability to move for extended periods.
Despite his critical condition, the hospital staff continued to provide the necessary care to stabilize him. The hospital management assured the public that Kinyua’s condition had remained stable until the tragic incident.
In response to the incident, KNH has heightened its security measures. The hospital has CCTV cameras in common areas and also has police officers stationed within the facility.
The hospital is working closely with the police to ensure the safety of its 1,800 patients, as well as the safety of staff and visitors.
Sigilali expressed deep sadness over Kinyua’s death and offered condolences to the patient’s family, assuring them that the hospital is committed to providing any support needed during this difficult time.
Kenyatta National Hospital has also set up a 24-hour helpline to provide ongoing psychological support for the grieving family.
A post-mortem examination of Kinyua’s body will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death, as directed by the DCI.
The hospital asked the public to avoid speculating about the incident and to allow the investigation to proceed without interference.
KNH remains committed to full transparency during the investigation process and has vowed to take all necessary steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
