A family in Mlolongo, Machakos, is in mourning after their three-year-old son tragically died from falling into an open manhole at a stalled construction site in Mlolongo Phase 3 on Monday, February 3, 2025.
The boy, whose identity has been withheld, was playing outside when the incident occurred.
His father, Hellon Samson, revealed that his son was in good health earlier in the day and had gone out to play with other children in the neighborhood before the tragic accident.
The boy’s mother, Janet Nyaboke, described her only child as full of life and expressed her heartbreak, saying, “It’s heartbreaking to lose him in this manner.”
The family is now seeking justice for their son’s untimely death, demanding accountability from the owners of the unfinished construction site that left the manhole uncovered and exposed.
The incident has sparked outrage among the residents of Mlolongo Phase 3, who have raised concerns about the ongoing safety hazards in the area.
Village elder Paul Mutavi criticized the lack of safety measures at construction sites, calling it “unacceptable” that investors fail to secure their sites, leaving the community at risk.
According to Mutavi, this is not the first time a child has fallen into the same manhole, prompting locals to take action and cover the dangerous pit.
Residents have also pointed out the numerous other open pits, manholes, and septic tanks scattered across the area, posing significant risks to both children and pedestrians.
These hazards have become an ongoing concern for the community, which is calling for immediate intervention to address the issue and prevent further accidents.
The authorities have confirmed the incident, with Athi River East Police Commander Anderson Mbae stating that the matter was reported at the Mlolongo Police Station.
The boy’s body was taken to Kitengela Level 4 Hospital Mortuary in Kajiado County for an autopsy, while the community continues to demand that the authorities hold those responsible for the construction site’s negligence accountable.
