Mumias East MP, Peter Salasya, has expressed strong dissatisfaction with his position in a recent survey that ranked him fifth among Kenya's top-performing Members of Parliament (MPs).
The survey, conducted by Infotrak, sought to identify MPs who excelled in areas such as development, representation, and legislative contributions.
The results, however, have sparked controversy, with Salasya claiming that his performance was unfairly assessed.
According to the survey, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino was rated the best-performing MP with an impressive 72%, followed closely by Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, who scored 71%.
In a closely contested ranking, Kabuchai MP Kalasinga Joseph Simiyu and Kathiani MP Robert Mbui both received 62%, securing the third spot.
Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba and Sirisia MP John Waluke tied for fourth place with 61%, while Salasya himself, along with Mbooni MP Erastus Nzioka Kivasu, also received a rating of 61%, placing them in a shared fifth position.
Despite these respectable scores, Salasya was not pleased with his ranking and raised concerns about what he described as "rigging" in the poll.
He firmly believes that he deserved to be ranked number one. “Being number five is not enough. I should be number one,” he said in a statement.
Salasya confidently argued that his exceptional planning, strategic thinking, and commitment to his constituency’s development efforts were overlooked in the survey.
“I was rigged, but it’s okay. I’ll bounce back. I deserve to be at the top,” he added.
While disappointed, Salasya expressed his intent to learn from the MPs who were ranked higher than him.
He mentioned that he plans to visit Embakasi East and Kiharu constituencies to understand what Babu Owino and Ndindi Nyoro have done to achieve their high rankings.
“I will officially visit these constituencies to see what they have been able to do that I am not doing. I must be number one. That’s where I belong,” Salasya stated.
The survey results have sparked widespread discussions among Kenyans about what constitutes a good MP.
Many people have praised Babu Owino and Ndindi Nyoro for their notable contributions to their constituents and encouraged them to continue their work in the interest of national development.
The poll results also highlighted that MPs like Kalasinga Simiyu, Robert Mbui, Gathoni Wamuchomba, and John Waluke have made significant strides in legislative and development activities, earning them recognition for their efforts.
While some have supported Salasya’s frustrations, others have encouraged him to use the survey as motivation for improvement.
Critics argue that the survey should not solely define the success or failure of an MP but rather be seen as a tool for constructive feedback.
In another incident, Salasya recently found himself in hot water after livestreaming a parliamentary session during a debate.
The act was considered a breach of parliamentary rules and led to Speaker Moses Wetang'ula ordering an investigation into Salasya’s login details.
This incident added to the already growing controversy surrounding the MP. However, Salasya remained unfazed and emphasized that such challenges would not deter him from striving for greatness in his political journey.
Despite the ups and downs, Salasya remains resolute in his belief that he is destined for greater things.
“Greatness is my portion,” he declared, vowing to keep pushing toward the top. With his continued efforts and determination, Salasya hopes to be recognized as the best-performing MP in Kenya in the near future.
