Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has finally set a date for his much-anticipated political statement.
Speaking during a church service at Almighty God Ministries in Mathioya on Sunday, February 2, he apologized for the delay in addressing the Mt. Kenya region on its political future.
"I had promised to make a statement by December 31, 2024, but I ask for forgiveness for being a little late," Gachagua said.
"The response has been overwhelming, and I needed more time to go through all the feedback."
He explained that his nationwide consultative meetings had attracted voices from all over Kenya, not just the Mt. Kenya region.
"At first, I thought it was only the people of Mt. Kenya who would show up.
But people from across the country came, and I saw it fit not to lock anyone out," he stated.
Gachagua made it clear that he is being extra careful this time. "We cannot afford to repeat past mistakes.
In 2022, we supported a candidate without having our own political party. That is a mistake we must avoid," he declared.
According to him, the political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election needs proper planning.
"I have received many perspectives, and I want to analyze them carefully before making a pronouncement," he said.
The former deputy president announced that on February 9, he will present an interim report based on the views collected from Kenyans.
This report will outline their preferred forms of governance and give direction on the way forward.
Gachagua was accompanied by key political allies, including Murang'a Senator Joe Nyutu, Gatanga MP Edward Muriu, Maragua MP Mary Wamaua, and Naivasha MP Jane Kihara.
These leaders continued their criticism of President William Ruto's administration, particularly over rising cases of abductions.
In recent weeks, Gachagua has been positioning himself as a key player in the 2027 election.
He has openly expressed his willingness to work with opposition leaders like Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa.
"We are ready to make sacrifices to ensure this country is liberated from bad leadership," he said. "We cannot allow betrayal to continue."
With February 9 set as the date for his announcement, all eyes will be on Gachagua to see what direction he takes.
Will he form a new political party? Will he challenge President Ruto? Kenyans will soon find out.
