Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has urged Kenyans to be cautious when calling President William Ruto a one-term leader.
He compared Ruto’s situation to that of former U.S. President Donald Trump, who was voted out in 2020 but made a strong return in the 2024 elections.
"Trump was also considered a one-term president, but he came back with vengeance! Let’s be careful what we wish for," Olekina warned.
His statement has sparked discussions about Ruto’s chances in the 2027 elections.
Some opposition leaders believe Ruto will not secure a second term due to unfulfilled campaign promises, economic struggles, and rising protests.
However, Olekina’s comments suggest that dismissing Ruto too soon could be a mistake.
Many Kenyan leaders have publicly opposed Ruto’s leadership and are pushing to limit him to one term.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and Narc-Kenya’s Martha Karua are among those who believe Ruto should not be re-elected.
Critics accuse Ruto’s government of failing to address corruption, abductions, and economic hardships.
Protests have erupted in several parts of the country, with citizens demanding better governance.
"We need to come together as the opposition and field one strong candidate against Ruto," Karua suggested recently.
Several other leaders, including Roots Party’s George Wajackoyah and Senator Okiya Omtatah, have also voiced their support for removing Ruto from power in the next election.
Despite the opposition’s efforts, President Ruto remains confident in his leadership.
He has dismissed his critics, saying his focus is on delivering promises to Kenyans.
"When the time comes, I will face my opponents in the ballot. Right now, I am working for the people," Ruto said.
His allies believe that by 2027, Kenyans will see the benefits of his leadership, making it easier for him to win re-election.
Is a Political Realignment Possible?
"Politics is about strategy. If Gachagua plays his cards right, he might find himself back in the fold," Barasa said.
As the 2027 elections approach, the political landscape is shifting, and both Ruto’s supporters and critics are preparing for a tough battle ahead.
