Deputy President Kithure Kindiki recently visited Nyeri County on January 31, 2025, where he addressed the public and outlined key development initiatives being implemented by the government.
In his speech, Kindiki defended the Kenya Kwanza government, explaining that the administration’s initial focus was on stabilizing the economy, which had delayed some development projects.
Now that the economy is more stable, Kindiki emphasized that the government is prioritizing service delivery to Kenyans, particularly in areas such as infrastructure and power connectivity.
While in Kieni, Nyeri, Kindiki stressed the importance of moving away from divisive tribal politics.
He called out the destructive nature of tribalism, reminding the public that such politics only hinder progress.
"To get involved in politics at this time is reckless. Service delivery and bettering the lives of Kenyans are our top priorities," he said.
These remarks appeared to be a direct response to ongoing tensions in Mount Kenya, especially involving his predecessor Rigathi Gachagua, who has had significant influence in the region.
Kindiki outlined several important development projects for Nyeri, including the completion of over 12 roads worth KSh 17 billion.
This move is part of the government’s broader goal to improve the country's infrastructure, which had been delayed due to earlier priorities like economic stabilization.
Additionally, Kindiki announced a major push to expand electricity access through the “last mile connectivity” program, which aims to connect over one million homes to the national grid.
This will increase the number of households with electricity from 2.5 million in 2013 to an estimated 9 million by 2025.
Beyond infrastructure, Kindiki also spoke about job creation, revealing that 400 new markets are under construction nationwide, with several in Nyeri.
He promised to personally oversee the completion of these markets before the president officially opens them.
This is part of the government's broader plan to improve job opportunities, water supply, roads, and energy access.
Kindiki's visit to Nyeri was a significant move to solidify the government’s commitment to Mount Kenya, demonstrating a clear focus on development and unity over political divisions.
