Kisii Governor Simba Arati has urged ODM leader Raila Odinga to prioritize justice for victims of past protests as discussions about a possible alliance between ODM and UDA continue.
Speaking in Busia County on Friday, February 28, during the 20th anniversary of the ODM party, Arati emphasized the need to compensate families who lost their loved ones or suffered injuries during demonstrations organized by the opposition.
He cited a specific case in Kibera, where a family is still struggling after their relative was killed by the police during a protest.
"Raila, as you continue with consultations, just make sure that we get justice for one thing.
Those who were injured and killed should be compensated," Arati stated.
He further recalled an incident from his time as Nairobi MP when he witnessed police shooting a protester.
"Up to this day, the family is still struggling. If we are to work with the government, let them ensure that these families are compensated," he added.
Arati also addressed growing divisions within the ODM party over the potential alliance with President William Ruto's UDA.
Some party members are reportedly pushing for Raila to work with Ruto, while others prefer an alliance with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Kisii governor issued a stern warning against indiscipline among ODM leaders, urging unity within the party.
"Let us respect each other. I want to warn leaders against indiscipline.
We shall deal with you. The party has to have order. Let us work together as we move forward," Arati warned.
The debate over a possible ODM-UDA alliance has sparked mixed reactions among supporters, with some arguing that working with Ruto could weaken the opposition.
Others believe it is a strategic move to secure political influence in the next government.
