Tensions erupted in Malela village, Seme sub-county, Kisumu, during the burial of Fidel Denis Ofuongo, a fifth-year Aeronautical Engineering student at Kenyatta University.
Fidel's lifeless body was found in River Nyamasaria, and his mysterious death has led to growing suspicions and unrest in the community.
On Saturday, February 8, 2025, as Fidel was being laid to rest, a group of rowdy youths stormed the home of John Arida, an elderly man who is related to the deceased.
They accused Arida's sons of being involved in Fidel’s death.
The violent attack resulted in the burning of three houses on Arida’s property, along with other personal belongings, including a tuk-tuk.
Arida, who was away from home at the time, expressed his shock and fear, pleading for the authorities’ intervention to ensure his safety.
The tension surrounding Fidel’s death has been growing for weeks.
According to the victim’s family, Fidel was last seen alive with George Outa, one of Arida’s sons, and other friends.
The group had reportedly visited several locations in Kisumu before Fidel was allegedly beaten and abandoned by the same individuals he had been with earlier that evening.
The family’s claims were further detailed in Fidel’s eulogy, which described the distressing events of that night.
A CCTV footage showing Fidel being dragged and assaulted raised suspicions about the group’s involvement in his death.
The investigation into Fidel’s death, led by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kisumu East, is still ongoing.
A post-mortem examination revealed that the cause of death was asphyxia, likely due to a lack of oxygen, rather than drowning, as initially suspected.
Despite this finding, the family believes that powerful individuals are working to block justice, and the case continues to raise questions about the influence of local figures in the matter.
While George Outa and others have denied any wrongdoing, explaining that they were with Fidel on the night of his death, the unrest in the village has been fueled by rumors and distrust.
The violence at Arida's home highlights the growing frustration among the villagers, as many believe that justice has yet to be served.
