The family of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman, Wafula Chebukati, has spoken out after his official X (formerly Twitter) account became active again.
The account, which had been silent for a year, surprised many Kenyans when it posted a message after his passing on February 20, 2025.
“This X account will henceforth serve as an official channel for funeral announcements by his family,” the post read.
Chebukati, who had been battling brain cancer for a long time, died after suffering a cardiac arrest.
His family confirmed that he had undergone two surgeries in a bid to fight the illness, but unfortunately, his condition did not improve.
Speaking about his legacy, the family said that Chebukati’s work would continue to inspire many Kenyans.
“As we continue to mourn the transition of our beloved husband and father, we honor his legacy which will forever inspire us,” the statement added.
Chebukati’s family has announced that he will be laid to rest on March 8, 2025, at their Kitale farm.
The family has also asked for privacy during this difficult time and urged people to avoid unnecessary speculation about his death.
“We kindly ask the public to respect our privacy as we mourn our beloved father,” said the family spokesperson, Eric Nyongesa.
Additionally, the family recently introduced Chebukati’s three children to the public to clear up rumors.
His firstborn son, Jonathan, his daughter, Racheal, and his lastborn son, Emmanuel, stood together during a press briefing.
Following the news of his passing, many Kenyans, including top leaders, have expressed their condolences.
President William Ruto and other government officials have praised Chebukati’s dedication to public service.
“He was a man of integrity who served this nation with commitment,” one leader stated.
Many Kenyans also took to social media to send messages of support to his family.
“May his soul rest in peace. He did what many could not do,” one person wrote.
