Milka Moraa, the woman who became widely known after being humiliated by Pastor Ng'ang'a over her rent struggles, has now turned a new page in her life.
With the help of generous well-wishers, Moraa has secured a chance to own an affordable housing unit at the Mukuru Meteorological Social Housing Site.
Moraa’s journey from public embarrassment to financial relief began when Kenyans online came together to raise Ksh400,000 for her.
This amount will go towards the deposit of a self-contained studio apartment, which is part of the government’s affordable housing initiative.
The cost of the apartment is estimated at Ksh640,000, a price that many working-class Kenyans can afford with the right support.
The studio apartment, which will be part of a broader 13,000-unit housing project currently under construction in Mukuru, comes with essential amenities like a kitchen, bathroom, and toilet.
Sheila Waweru, the Acting CEO of the Affordable Housing Programme, shared that Moraa, who now earns Ksh18,000 monthly, will be able to make progressive payments toward fully owning the home.
Speaking to the media on February 3, Waweru expressed hope that the affordable housing project would continue to support more individuals like Moraa, who are struggling to find decent and affordable accommodation.
The government’s initiative has made it possible for people like Moraa to access homes that were once out of reach for many low-income earners.
Moraa, who had been heartbroken by the public humiliation she experienced, found strength in the outpouring of support from Kenyans across the country.
"I was really heartbroken when the pastor humiliated me while I told him my predicaments, but I remained hopeful and it has turned out great," she said.
This turn of events highlights the positive impact of collective action and how the affordable housing program is helping many families achieve homeownership.
