The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is once again facing internal conflicts as Nairobi branch chairman and Makadara MP George Aladwa openly criticized party Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna.
Aladwa accused Sifuna of weakening ODM by opposing Raila Odinga’s evolving political strategy.
Speaking to the press in Nairobi on Sunday, Aladwa did not hold back in his attack. “Sifuna is playing a dangerous game.
He cannot continue undermining the leadership of Raila Odinga and expect to survive politically in ODM,” he said.
The disagreement arises from ODM’s position on working with the Kenya Kwanza government.
President William Ruto has recently appointed some ODM members to his Cabinet, a move that has divided the party.
While Aladwa and other leaders see this as a smart political strategy, Sifuna remains strongly opposed to any cooperation with Ruto’s administration.
“Our party has its leadership and direction. If Sifuna wants to fight this, then maybe he should consider joining Gachagua and his team,” Aladwa stated.
“ODM does not belong to one person. We must move together as a team.”
Sifuna, on his part, has remained vocal about ODM staying in opposition.
He has insisted that the party should not work with Kenya Kwanza, especially as the 2027 elections approach.
“We are the opposition, and we must hold the government accountable.
There is no room for negotiations with those who do not respect democracy,” Sifuna recently remarked.
Aladwa reminded the party of past internal struggles, particularly pointing to the removal of former ODM Secretary-General Ababu Namwamba in 2016.
He warned that if Sifuna continues on his path, he might suffer a similar fate.
“We have seen this before. No one is bigger than the party.
If Sifuna thinks he can dictate ODM’s position without consulting others, then he should prepare himself,” Aladwa said.
ODM now faces a critical moment as these divisions threaten to weaken the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
The big question remains—will ODM stay united, or will these power struggles cause an irreversible split?
