The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested 38 suspects linked to a series of robberies targeting pedestrians and motorists in Nairobi.
The arrests follow a wave of criminal activity that erupted during President William Ruto’s recent visits to different parts of the city.
According to the DCI, the suspects were apprehended in connection with attacks along major roads such as Thika Highway, Waiyaki Way, and Jogoo Road.
These areas have seen increased crime, with gangs using motorcycles to ambush people, steal valuables, and escape quickly.
During the operation, officers recovered seven motorcycles believed to have been used in the crimes.
Several stolen mobile phones were also found and will be used as evidence in court. Police have urged members of the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities.
On March 11, following President Ruto’s rally in Mathare, the city experienced heightened criminal activity.
Groups of youths engaged in looting and vandalism along key roads, including Thika Road, Juja Road, and Outering Road.
Motorists and businesses suffered losses as criminals took advantage of the situation.
Videos shared online showed disturbing scenes of criminals attacking passengers in public transport vehicles.
Others were seen breaking into private cars and snatching valuables from pedestrians.
Shortly after the president's speech, disorder spread near the National Youth Service headquarters and the Kariobangi Roundabout.
Groups of youths blocked sections of Thika Road, smashing car windows and robbing passengers.
The violence extended to Juja Road and Outering Road, forcing motorists to take alternative routes.
Police responded by firing warning shots to disperse the crowds.
The situation escalated to a point where President Ruto had to cancel a planned rally in Roysambu and return to the State House.
Similar cases were reported after the president’s visit to Eastlands, where residents along Jogoo Road complained of being mugged.
Criminals allegedly took advantage of the confusion to snatch bags and valuables.
The arrested suspects are set to appear in court on Monday, facing charges including robbery with violence and obstruction.
In response to the incidents, the DCI has deployed more officers to patrol affected areas.
The agency has also called on residents to share information that could help arrest more criminals.
