A family in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, was filled with deep sorrow as they finally laid Naomi Marijani to rest, six years after her tragic death.
Naomi was murdered by her husband, Hamis Luwongo, on March 15, 2019, in Dar es Salaam.
The emotional burial brought back painful memories for her daughter, Gracious, who could not hold back her tears upon seeing her mother’s remains.
Naomi’s murder remained a mystery for years. It was later discovered that Luwongo had burned her body and buried the remains in a garden, planting a banana tree on top to hide the crime.
The truth only came out after a long court battle, which led to his conviction and sentencing to death on February 26, 2025.
This ruling allowed Naomi’s family to finally give her a proper burial.
During the burial, Naomi’s daughter, Gracious, was overwhelmed with grief.
She had been living with her father after her mother’s disappearance, unaware of what had happened. Her aunt, Salma Marijani, recalled the day Naomi went missing.
"That morning, Naomi prepared her daughter for school like any other day.
Later, when Gracious returned home and asked about her mother, her father told her that Naomi had traveled," Salma explained.
However, Naomi’s sudden disappearance raised suspicion.
Salma decided to take Gracious in, giving Luwongo time to “search” for his wife. Unfortunately, the truth was far worse than they could have imagined.
For Gracious, losing her mother in such a brutal manner was devastating.
"She could not function properly. Many pastors came to pray for her, and we had to take her for guidance and counseling," Salma shared.
Although Gracious had slowly begun to heal, the recent court ruling reopened old wounds. She found out about it through her classmates at school.
"When I visited her, the first thing she asked me was if it was true that her father had killed her mother," Salma said.
Despite everything, Gracious is doing well in school, scoring As and Bs. She remembers her mother as a loving woman who was always there for her.
"She has asked about her father before, and I told her he is in prison," Salma revealed.
