The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rainfall expected in various parts of the country from Sunday, March 9, 2025.
According to the department's director, Dr. David Gikungu, the rains will be above 20mm, with some areas experiencing over 30mm within 24 hours.
The areas likely to experience heavy downpours include parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the highlands both west and east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi.
The southeastern lowlands are also expected to receive significant rainfall.
Counties at high risk of heavy rainfall include Kakamega, Bungoma, Vihiga, Busia, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, and Kisii.
Other affected counties are Nyamira, Bomet, Kericho, Nandi, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo Marakwet.
Further, West Pokot, Turkana, Marsabit, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado, and Nairobi will also experience the rains.
Dr. Gikungu has urged residents in these regions to be cautious, as the heavy rainfall could result in floods, flash floods, and reduced visibility.
He has advised people to avoid taking shelter under trees or staying near grilled windows during storms to minimize the risk of lightning strikes.
Authorities have also encouraged Kenyans to prepare for possible disruptions, especially in flood-prone areas.
Motorists should exercise caution while driving in wet conditions, and those living near rivers or low-lying areas should be ready for potential evacuations if necessary.
This alert comes as Kenya enters its long rains season, which typically runs from March to May.
April is expected to experience the heaviest downpours, particularly around the Easter holiday.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has confirmed that the March-May period is one of the most significant rainy seasons in the country.
Regions such as the Lake Victoria Basin, the Central and South Rift Valley, the highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, and the Coastal Strip will likely receive more than 300mm of rainfall throughout the season.
Dr. Gikungu assured the public that the meteorological department will provide updates if there are any changes in the weather forecast.
Residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions to avoid any dangers posed by the upcoming heavy rains.
