A fire broke out at the CT Scan Unit of Kericho County Referral Hospital on Friday evening, damaging a vital medical machine.
The fire is suspected to have been caused by a battery fault. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.
The hospital’s 64-slice CT Scan machine, along with its 32 batteries, was completely damaged in the fire.
The exact cost of the damage has not yet been determined.
The incident has raised concerns about medical services at the facility, as the machine plays a crucial role in diagnosing various conditions, including head injuries, strokes, and internal organ diseases.
Dr. George Owiti, the officer in charge of Radiology and Imaging at the hospital, confirmed the incident.
He stated that smoke was seen coming from the CT Scan room, prompting hospital staff to respond quickly.
They immediately switched off the power supply and took the necessary precautions to prevent the fire from spreading.
At the time of the fire, one patient was in the CT Scan unit. Medical staff acted swiftly to evacuate the patient, ensuring their safety. No injuries were reported.
Both the Kericho County fire department and Finlay’s fire brigade arrived on time to contain the situation.
Their prompt action prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the hospital, avoiding further damage.
The destruction of the CT Scan machine is a major setback for the hospital, as it serves many patients from Kericho and neighboring counties.
Patients requiring CT scans may now have to seek services in private hospitals or travel to other counties, leading to increased costs and delays in diagnosis.
Authorities are expected to assess the full extent of the damage and make arrangements for a replacement machine.
Hospital management is also likely to investigate the cause of the fire to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Residents of Kericho have expressed concern over the incident and hope that the government will act swiftly to provide a new CT Scan machine.
