Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan has called for justice following the death of 17-year-old Ibrahim Ramadhan, who was allegedly shot by a police officer in Majengo, Nairobi.
The young boy, who had disabilities, was reportedly shot in the head on Tuesday evening and later succumbed to his injuries.
Speaking on Wednesday, March 5, the MP strongly condemned the killing and described it as a tragic loss.
"The senseless killing of Ibrahim Ramadhan is heartbreaking and unacceptable. His life was cut short in a brutal act of police violence.
We cannot allow such injustices to continue," Hassan said.
The MP urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to move swiftly and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
"This is not an isolated case. We have seen too many young people losing their lives due to police brutality.
I demand a full and thorough investigation by IPOA so that the officer involved faces the law," he stated.
Following the shooting, angry residents took to the streets of Majengo on Wednesday morning, demanding justice for Ibrahim.
The protests quickly escalated, with demonstrators setting up bonfires and barricading roads.
Businesses in Gikomba market were forced to close as tensions rose.
Some protestors stormed the area chief’s office and set it on fire.
Reports also indicate that houses belonging to police officers were torched. In addition, two police vehicles were destroyed in the chaos.
The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has raised concerns about the rising cases of police violence, urging the government to take firm action.
According to witnesses, the incident occurred when police officers stopped a group of youths in Majengo for a random search.
The officers suspected them of being involved in drug trafficking.
One of the suspects, fearing arrest, allegedly called for help from other youths nearby.
A confrontation broke out, and the officers were forced to retreat. Amid the commotion, one officer reportedly fired his gun, hitting Ibrahim in the head.
He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
MP Yusuf Hassan extended his condolences to Ibrahim’s family and vowed to support them in seeking justice.
"My heart goes out to Ibrahim’s mother, Hadija, and his entire family. We will not rest until justice is served. Ibrahim’s death will not be in vain," he assured.
