Kenyan journalist Leon Lidigu has been honored at the Africa Health Agenda International Conference (AHAIC) 2025.
The Nation Media Group (NMG) journalist won the 6th Women in Global Health Awards in the Male Allies category.
This award recognizes men who actively support gender equality in the health sector by mentoring women, implementing gender-responsive policies, and championing initiatives that promote women's leadership.
Lidigu earned this award due to his dedication to highlighting issues affecting women, particularly in low-income areas.
His journalism played a key role in raising awareness about young women in Kibra who faced sexual abuse as they struggled to afford basic necessities like sanitary towels and food.
His reports led to a social media campaign that mobilized support, benefiting over 50,000 women in low-income households.
His work demonstrates the power of journalism in addressing social issues and advocating for change.
Through his reporting, he has influenced policies and encouraged organizations to take action on gender and health-related challenges.
The Women in Global Health Awards recognizes outstanding individuals making a difference in areas such as innovation, climate action, youth empowerment, and economic transformation.
The selection process involves public nominations, where people identify those who are driving meaningful change.
Lidigu, the only Kenyan among the winners, received a congratulatory message from Amref Health Africa Group CEO, Dr. Githinji Gitahi.
The award letter praised his contributions, particularly his solution-oriented journalism that has impacted many lives.
In response to the award, Lidigu expressed his gratitude and humility.
He was surprised by the recognition and dedicated the award to the people who bravely share their struggles with journalists.
He emphasized that storytelling is a powerful tool in holding authorities accountable and pushing for societal change.
Lidigu is set to travel to Kigali, Rwanda, from March 3 to March 6 to attend the AHAIC 2025 awarding ceremony.
This event is jointly organized by Amref Health Africa, the Ministry of Health Rwanda, the African Union, and the Africa CDC.
Lidigu is a multi-award-winning journalist specializing in climate and health issues.
He currently works at Nation Media Group and is also a member of the AfricaREACH Leadership Council, which focuses on eliminating HIV/AIDS in children and young people by 2030.
