ODM leader Raila Odinga has spoken out about his recent agreement with President William Ruto, stating that his decision was made in the interest of Kenyans.
Speaking at a burial ceremony in Kiambu County on Tuesday, Raila clarified that his cooperation with Ruto is not a political betrayal but a strategic move to push for reforms from within the government.
"When things got tough, they came to us, and we agreed to work together.
We are giving them time to implement the recommendations in the NADCO report.
The Housing Levy is not working and must be fixed, taxation is too high and must be reviewed, and these changes cannot happen from the outside.
You must be inside the system to make sure the work is done. We cannot stand by and watch the country collapse," Raila said.
He explained that his decision to work with Ruto was based on the need to address the economic hardships facing Kenyans.
According to him, the opposition can only achieve real change if it actively engages with the government rather than remaining on the sidelines.
Raila also addressed concerns from his supporters who feel abandoned.
He assured them that he is still fighting for the people, even though he is working with the government.
"Many people are making noise, saying Raila has joined Ruto and left us.
I have not joined Ruto. I am where I have always been, fighting for the rights of Kenyans.
We have been on the streets pushing for lower costs of living. Last year, the youth, Gen Z, stood up and demanded better governance.
The government was shaken, and they even sent the police and military to stop them.
They panicked so much that they almost broke their own government. We must continue pushing for what is right," Raila stated.
On the 2027 general elections, Raila said the people of Kenya will decide their future leader when the time comes.
He insisted that his main focus for now is ensuring that Kenyans do not continue suffering under poor governance.
"The election will come in 2027, and Kenyans will decide who should lead them.
But for now, we cannot allow them to suffer. We must fight for their rights," he said.
Raila’s remarks clarify his position on working with the government while keeping an eye on the next election.
