Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga is facing scrutiny after making controversial remarks about his role in preventing a military coup against President William Ruto.
Reports suggest that Chief of Defence Forces General Charles Muriu Kahariri may take disciplinary action against him.
However, official sources have not confirmed any action at this time.
Speaking at a recent event, Raila reportedly stated, "If it were not for me, the military would have taken over.
I stepped in to save the situation." These words have sparked debate across the country, with government officials and security experts questioning the implications of his statement.
General Charles Muriu Kahariri, who was appointed as Kenya’s Chief of Defence Forces on May 2, 2024, after the passing of General Francis Ogolla, has remained silent on the matter.
However, sources claim that he is aware of Raila’s remarks and is assessing their potential impact on national security.
A senior military official, who requested anonymity, said, "Such statements can create unnecessary tension.
The military is a disciplined force that follows constitutional procedures."
While there has been no official communication from State House or the Ministry of Defence, political analysts believe the government may issue a statement soon.
A senior government official hinted at possible action, saying, "Reckless talk about military matters is dangerous. Such claims must be handled carefully."
However, Raila’s allies argue that his words were taken out of context.
A close associate defended him, saying, "He was simply stating his influence in national stability. There was no threat to the government."
Many Kenyans have taken to social media to express their views.
Some believe Raila’s remarks are exaggerated, while others see them as a warning about hidden political struggles.
A Nairobi resident shared his thoughts, saying, "Raila has always been vocal, but this statement could have serious consequences."
Another citizen added, "The military should remain neutral. Politicians should stop dragging them into politics."
