A tense moment unfolded during the funeral of Malava MP Malulu Injendi on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, when Kakamega Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda tripped and fell while making her way to the stage.
The event, attended by President William Ruto and other dignitaries, took place in Kakamega County.
The funeral service was proceeding smoothly until the master of ceremonies, Ikolomani MP Bernard Masaka Shinali, invited legislators to the podium to pay tribute to the late MP.
Muhanda, elegantly dressed in a long gown and a neatly wrapped turban, walked confidently towards the stage, flanked by two men.
However, just before reaching the podium, she suddenly lost her balance and fell.
The crowd reacted immediately, with murmurs spreading through the mourners.
Some leaders on stage attempted to assist her, but she quickly stood up and waved at the audience, signaling that she was unharmed.
Instead of dwelling on the moment, she continued with her speech as if nothing had happened.
When it was her turn to address the gathering, Muhanda chose to begin with a Swahili gospel song, Mwendo Nimeumaliza, Imani Nimeilinda (I have finished the race, I have kept the faith).
Her decision to focus on the tribute rather than the fall impressed many, with some praising her resilience and composure.
Muhanda’s experience is not the first of its kind in Kenya’s political scene.
In November 2023, President William Ruto nearly tripped while planting trees in Makueni.
Although his security detail quickly responded, he managed to regain his balance and dismissed their concerns with a smile.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga also faced a similar situation in 2016 during a rally in Malindi.
While delivering his speech alongside other leaders, the podium collapsed, causing him and several others to fall.
Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, and the rally continued.
Videos of Muhanda’s fall quickly circulated on social media, sparking various reactions.
Some Kenyans admired her for handling the moment with grace, while others made lighthearted jokes about the incident.
Despite the brief disruption, the funeral service proceeded as planned, with leaders paying their last respects to the late MP Malulu Injendi.
