Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has dismissed criticism from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, saying he will not be swayed from his unity deal with President William Ruto.
Speaking at an Iftar dinner in Upper Hill, Nairobi, Odinga laughed off Gachagua’s complaints about the government, reminding him that he once claimed to have locked him out of State House.
Odinga noted that his decision to work with Ruto was made with a clear purpose and that he would not be distracted by those who suddenly changed their stance toward him.
He questioned how people who once called him names were now trying to convince him to change direction.
“The step we have taken, we understand it. We know where we are going. Some people are now telling us to go in another direction.
Yesterday, you said we were bad people, and today we are angels?
How does that happen? We cannot be fooled because we know our path,” he said, drawing laughter from the audience.
He further mocked Gachagua’s previous claims that he had secured the government from outsiders.
Odinga likened the situation to a trap set for others that had now caught the very people who set it.
“There are those who set traps, but now they are the ones caught in them,” he said.
Odinga also addressed the issue of elections, saying that Kenya is still struggling to achieve a truly free and fair electoral process.
He stressed that the country must continue working toward transparency in elections.
“We still have a problem when it comes to elections. As a country, we have not yet reached the level of free and fair elections, but that time will come.
Until then, we must all sacrifice. Where we are right now is not what we wanted, but we must move forward,” he stated.
Odinga urged his supporters to remain strong, saying that the country’s progress is more important than individual interests.
He assured them that his decision to work with the government was made with the best interests of the nation in mind.
"Let’s continue to stand together because we know where we are going.
Kenya is bigger than any individual, and we must keep defending our nation. We have come from far, and we must protect this country," he said.
The event was attended by several Muslim leaders, including Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho and National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed.
