The National Police Service (NPS) has responded to a tragic accident involving President William Ruto’s motorcade on Thursday, March 13, 2025.
The incident, which happened at Adams Arcade along Ngong Road, resulted in the death of a foreign national who was crossing the road.
In a statement, the police confirmed that investigations had begun.
"Following the road traffic accident that occurred today at Adams Arcade along Ngong Road, involving government vehicles and resulting in the death of a pedestrian who is a foreign national, the National Police Service is handling the matter, and investigations have commenced," the NPS said.
Reports indicate that the victim, a Caucasian man, was hit by the speeding motorcade as it moved from Lang’ata to Kibra, where President Ruto was commissioning a project.
The incident shocked bystanders, who rushed to help, only to realize the man had died on the spot.
A witness, James Ouma, shared what he saw. “The convoy was moving very fast, and suddenly, there was a loud thud.
People screamed, and when we got closer, we saw the man lying on the ground, lifeless.”
Another resident, Lucy Kamau, criticized the convoy’s actions.
“They did not even stop. How can they hit someone and just drive off? It is really heartbreaking.”
Videos and photos circulating online showed a crowd gathering at the scene as they tried to identify the victim.
Shortly after, police arrived, secured the area, and took the body to Nairobi City Mortuary for an autopsy.
The accident has raised concerns over the safety of pedestrians when high-profile convoys move through Nairobi.
Many Kenyans criticized the President’s logistics team, saying better planning could prevent such tragedies.
Additionally, there were reports of other security issues linked to the President’s movements.
Several Nairobi residents complained of attacks by goons, with cases of looting and vandalism adding to the frustration.
Muchiri Nyaga, the Director of Corporate Communication at NPS, urged the public to provide any useful information.
“We are investigating this matter thoroughly. If anyone has details that can assist, please come forward,” he stated.
Nyaga also reminded road users to be extra careful. “We ask motorists and pedestrians to follow traffic rules. Road safety is a shared responsibility.”
