A 28-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of 45-year-old Rachealine Rutto, whose body was discovered in her Bomet home on March 25, 2025.
Rutto’s daughter made the grim discovery after trying to contact her mother throughout the day without success.
Worried after multiple unanswered calls, Rutto’s daughter went to her mother's home to check on her.
Upon arrival, she found her mother’s lifeless body on the bed, with severe injuries, including deep stab wounds to her neck, chest, and back.
Shocked by the sight, she immediately reported the incident to the authorities.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) launched a thorough investigation, which led them to arrest Wesley Cheruiyot Koech, a resident of Sailo village in Kipkelion East.
The arrest followed a series of forensic examinations and leads that pointed to Koech as the prime suspect.
Upon being taken into custody, Koech cooperated with investigators and led them to his home, where several crucial pieces of evidence were found.
Among the items recovered were a bloodstained knife, believed to be the murder weapon, as well as Rutto’s personal items, including a ring and a phone.
Disturbingly, the phone contained photographs of Rutto’s body, which had been taken by Koech after the murder.
The motive behind the brutal crime has been linked to a long-standing personal grievance.
Investigators revealed that Koech had been in a romantic relationship with Rutto that ended in 2016 when Rutto chose to move on with another man.
Koech, feeling betrayed and resentful over the breakup, allegedly harbored anger towards Rutto, especially after having financially supported her during their time together.
The authorities have confirmed that Koech is facing serious charges, and he remains in police custody as the investigation continues.
The case highlights the dangers of unresolved personal issues and the importance of seeking peaceful solutions rather than resorting to violence.
